Conister/Eurocycles Autumn XC Series Rd 5 Race Report.

The Conister Bank / Eurocycles Autumn mountain bike series has come to a finish, the final round was held on Sunday 30th October. With championship titles up for grabs across all categories the racing was always going to be explosive from the start. Many riders looking at finishing the series with personal bests in fastest lap times or just trying to get an extra lap in before the hour racing finished. Keeping the course the same, over the five races, has meant many riders have learnt how to attack sections of the course and where they need to try and push that bit harder.

Thirty six riders took to the start line at 0955 for a race briefing. The track conditions were mixed for this final round with dry fast sections leading down to wet fast sweeping corners where only the brave would try to get round without touching any breaks.  The start was frantic as riders jostled for position along the 250 meter straight heading for the first left hand corner. Lee Gale made his move from the start leading the field, but with experienced riders Nick Corlett and Danny Curtis hot on his heals and ready to exploit any wrong move he had to be careful. Lee led into first drop but he just ran a little wide opening the door the two experienced riders to nip ahead.

Emily Looker, who has improved in every race, launched off the start line to put championship leader, Emma Atkinson, under pressure. Emily’s plan of putting in two or three fast aggressive laps was going to make for some interesting racing between the two ladies. Unfortunately this came to an end mid-way round the first lap as Emily took a spill off the bike. A quick recovery and check over of the bike Emily now had to try and chase back Emma who was now the leading lady.

Les Corran and John Venables in the expert class battled as the leading pair with Les lapping around 10 seconds per lap quicker. A dominant ride by Andrew Westmoarland on his fat bike did an impressive 10 laps in 1 hour 1 min. Novice rider, Scotty Graig, (will soon need to move up to the Sport category) was a full lap ahead of his nearest competition, Matt Bond. Caroline Helks, in her first race of the series, managed to narrowly beat Grace Fielding to take third place.

The Autumn Series championship over all standing are as follows
